Talent: How to tell if you have it

(Warning: This is a long post, and not for the faint of heart. No sugar-coating, here.)

The first thing I want to say is that talent is a gift, not an accomplishment. Accomplishments are achieved through effort. No effort: no credit. Using one’s talent to achieve something impressive usually requires some effort, maybe even quite a lot of effort, but a person with little or no talent may deserve far more credit for achieving far less simply because of the amount of effort involved.

The second thing I want to say is that there are different degrees and types of talent –  as some astute readers of my previous post pointed out. Talent isn’t all-or-nothing, and even in a given field, it comes in different flavors.  Within the field of fantasy fiction, the talent of J.R.R. Tolkien differs from that of, say, Ray Bradbury, whose talent is different from that of Louis Carroll.  A.A Milne and Dr. Seuss both wrote wonderful fanciful works for children, but those works are very different in just so many ways. Each of these writers produced something unique and special in its own way, and I don’t think any one of them could have done as well at what any of the others did.

What qualifies me to write on the subject of talent, you may ask. Well, how about half a century of trying to do things – of succeeding and failing – and of watching other people try to do things and succeed and fail…

Let me give you some examples.

There was always a piano in the house when I was growing up, and I tried three times in my childhood and youth to learn to play, at least twice through paid lessons. I remember best the last and most prolonged effort. It was marked by a discouraging rate of progress that stalled completely when I began learning to add simple chords to the melody. I simply could not get through The Irish Washerwoman (played at half-speed) without making a mistake (usually several). It seemed the need to play multiple notes simultaneously with both hands was more than my nervous system could handle.  My general lack of talent for things requiring manual dexterity was confirmed when I later tried playing the recorder (baroque flute) – on which you play one note at a time but using more than one finger for each note – and touch-typing, which uses only one finger at a time to produce each letter.  The bottom line: When it comes to rapid-finger-movement manual skills, I’m slow, I make a lot of mistakes, my rate of improvement is glacial, and my skill plateaus at dismally low levels.

Now contrast my experience with drawing: When I was in elementary school people started saying, “That’s really good, Carol; I wish I could draw like that.” Those early drawings weren’t that good, actually, but I guess they were better than what other kids could do, and I kept getting better at such a rate that the compliments kept coming. People would also ask how I’d gotten so good. I couldn’t tell them. I’d drawn spontaneously from an early age and I spent quite a lot of hours doing it, certainly, but I did so because I liked it. It wasn’t effort, for me. I was generally pleased with what I produced, but kept trying to do a little better because I just wanted to.

I had no art lessons as a child. While I took art classes in junior high and high school, those classes were largely just opportunities for students to show what they could do and experiment with different media. There was very little taught of a how-to nature. I did learn a few things in art classes at the college level, but I wouldn’t have been taking college art classes if I hadn’t already been pretty good at it.

Now, one could hypothesize that there’s something fundamentally different about playing a musical instrument than about drawing – that if I’d spent enough time at the piano, I could have ended up with a scholarship to a music conservatory. I don’t buy it. Take my father in law (not literally). He grew up in rented rooms above a blues bar in Pittsburgh before WWII. The family didn’t have much, but they did have an old piano. (I think maybe his mom gave lessons on it.) Well, he taught himself to play that thing by sitting down and trying to play the things he heard wafting up from downstairs. He had no lessons, and he couldn’t read a note of music. He played entirely by ear, and in a horrendous key that was all sharps, but he was good enough that when he enlisted in the army at the age of eighteen, everyone in his unit knew him as the piano player. He played the accordion too. Basically, if it had a keyboard, he could play it. But if you ever said, “Gee, I wish I could play like that,” he’d tell you to just sit down and try to play something.  Sure, you had to work at it some, but basically that was all there was to it as far as he was concerned.

My father in law always kept a drawing on the wall that I’d done of my husband about the time we were married. It seemed I couldn’t visit without having him go on about how good that drawing was and how he didn’t know how I could do that. Finally I told him that for me drawing the picture was like him playing the piano. It wasn’t that hard for me because I had talent for drawing, just like playing the piano wasn’t that hard for him because he had talent for playing the piano. He finally seemed to get it.

Okay. So I define “talent” as an innate ability to do something that a lot of other people can’t do. It may also manifest as an ability to do something better, or with less effort.

We generally apply the term to the ability to do complex and impressive things – not to trivial traits like tongue-rolling, or obvious physical attributes like being tall enough to reach the top shelf. I assume that talents are written in our genes, if we knew where to look – but I would also bet that they are multi-gene traits that would be pretty hard to sort out completely.

And, based on my vast (ha ha) experience, I’ve identified a few basic characteristics of talented people.  And, if you still have the stomach for this, here goes:

1. Talent manifests early – not necessarily early in a person’s life, but early in a person’s efforts to do a thing. In a group of students trying something for the first time, the ones with talent will stand out, if not in their very first effort then within the first few efforts. If there is any delay it will be because someone or something is holding them back – there is some misconception, they’re being told to do things wrong, (the judges are taking bribes), or they’re hampered by some identifiable handicap.

The bottom line: Talented people don’t work and struggle through years of mediocrity and then suddenly discover – wow! I’ve got talent! Barring some conspiracy of fate or humankind, if you’ve been working on a thing for quite a while and the talent hasn’t come shining through, it’s not going to.

2. For talented people, effort yields progress that is relatively rapid and continuous. This applies to activities that require acquisition of skill or knowledge. (The word relatively is important here.) If progress could be plotted on a graph, the more talented person’s curve would rise more rapidly and top out at a higher level than that of the less talented person. Talented people can, of course, hit temporary snags or plateaus, but they tend to reach higher levels than less-talented people before this happens – and, it’s temporary. They can also, of course, be adversely affected by those external circumstances or handicaps mentioned above, but an observant person should be able to figure out what these are.

So, if you’re trying to learn to do something – and trying, and trying -­ and you just don’t seem to be making progress, it’s time to worry. If there’s nothing obvious getting in your way, and you’re not at the level you want to be at or need to be at to achieve success in your field, it’s probably time to find a new field.

3. Talent is self-rewarding. Talented people often work quite hard at what they do, but they tend to do so voluntarily. They may say that they “love the work” or that it “isn’t work” for them. This is because talent leads directly to success, and success is rewarding. (It helps that they also get lots of praise.) If their lives permit, talented people tend naturally to pursue their talents once they find them – assuming they have any interest – because they’ve found something that works for them. The more diligent and driven will pour in effort and will soar, the more indolent may persistently dabble. Talented artists “struggling for their art” are generally struggling against external circumstances, or perhaps against a conflicting personal handicap (Beethoven with his hearing loss). Perhaps their work isn’t appreciated by the society of their time, or they are being pushed to perform at extravagant levels to satisfy the demands of their patrons or the public. Those who choose professions that depend upon their talent may struggle because of the need to support themselves financially.  Their art may not pay enough. In other words, art is relatively easy for the talented artist.  Being an artist may not be.

So if the pursuit of your dream seems to be all work and no reward – on any level – that’s another bad sign.

4. Talented people know what they are trying to do, and just do it. I think it’s said of Michelangelo that he could see his intended creation within the block of marble and all he had to do was remove the bits that didn’t belong. What I’m getting at here includes this concept but goes beyond it. Talented people tend to evolve within themselves a “vision” of what they want to create or achieve. They can see it, hear it, feel it. Even if they don’t have the vocabulary to describe it, they know what they’re trying to do. And, because they are talented, doing it is a relatively straightforward matter of putting in the time and effort. Relatively straightforward, I say. Some skills may have to be learned. Michelangelo wasn’t born knowing how to use a chisel. Once he’d acquired that basic skill, however, I doubt he had to think much about it. Learning one’s way around a piano is probably a bit more involved than mastering a chisel, but once you’ve gotten there, if you’re talented, basically all you have to do is play.

So, to put it bluntly, if you consistently feel like you’re floundering, odds are it’s time to get out of the water. The course ahead should be clearer than that, and the necessary steps should feel do-able.

A related point involves being able to distinguish quality from the lack of it. The ability to discern quality is not, however, a defining characteristic of the talented person. Obviously there are lots of people who know quality when they see it but have no ability to produce it themselves. These people may become patrons, aficionados, or critics. I can imagine, also, that a talented person might be able to naturally and effortlessly create wonderful things without himself being able to see what was so special about them. People can be blind to their own talent, and yet follow it because it’s what comes naturally. In general, though, knowing what you’re trying to do and knowing what quality is are pretty close to the same thing.

It’s a whole lot easier to write well if you at least know what good writing looks like.

And finally:

5. A word to the talented is sufficient. Talented people often don’t need a lot of instruction.  Depending on the activity involved, they might not need any. A person with musical ability could demonstrate their talent on a deserted island – with their voice, or improvised instruments. Someone with a talent for computer programming is going to need a more specialized environment.  Less-talented people will try to improve their performance by reading advice columns, following rules, or going to seminars on “ten ways to improve your… (whatever)  Talented people will find these same pointers either obvious, or unnecessary – and occasionally just plain wrong.  They either just know these things instinctively, or they figure them out for themselves. And if there is a trick of the trade they haven’t found on their own (yet), telling them once is sufficient (or showing them – semantics and technical jargon can get in the way). They get an instant aha!  and implementation for them is just a matter of doing it.

So, if you’re getting critiques on your work from knowledgeable people, and you can’t figure out what they’re telling you to do, you’re in trouble. Ditto if you keep on getting the same criticisms even after you think you’ve made the corrections.

Talented artists don’t paint by the numbers; they just paint.

Talented writers don’t write by the rules; they just write.

Sometimes life demands that we keep on struggling to do things we’re not very good at – like balancing the checkbook. I felt I needed to become a touch typist, and after thirty odd years (some of them really odd), I am a touch typist – just not a very impressive one, and I never will be. Generally, though, I don’t recommend beating your head against walls. Life is too short. If you find you don’t have talent for a thing, leave it to those who do – unless there’s some pressing reason why you must do it (or you just really want to), and you’re content with doing a less than stellar job of it. There is no shame in this.

Do the best you can, and then go find something that you are good at.

  1. I wonder if the over-exuberant praise many kids now receive for doing rather unimpressive acts will result in future delusions of talent. It can be tough to balance the desire to promote good self-esteem in children without offering false praise.

    • Some I know who have experience interviewing the younger crop of job seekers claim that’s exactly what has happened. These young people come in assuming they’re all “A+” at everything. An upside, I’ve heard, is that they’re less competitive, more cooperative, because they think everyone is “A+”. The downside is that some of them seem to think the world owes them a high-paying job because, well obviously they’re “A+” , even though they may not be very capable or experienced.

      • Interesting to hear. I’ve never been a fan of false inflation of actions, and this confirms my attitude. But I also don’t believe in withholding praise where praise is due. I guess it’s important to find that balance when raising kids (or dealing with one’s employees).

      • You’re right – balance. I’m a big fan of honesty. I always tried to praise what I honestly could find to praise, and to praise it in realistic terms. Any way you look at it, parenting ain’t easy.

  2. I like what you say about talent being self-rewarding, in the sense that we don’t have to berate ourselves into doing the things we’re talented at. Another way to put it might be that, regardless of whether we’re skilled at something, if we have to abuse ourselves to get ourselves to do it, it may be a sign that we’re engaged in an activity that we don’t actually enjoy, and that we’re doing it because we think it’s the socially acceptable / rewarded thing to do.

      Yeah, I’m definitely in favor of letting people be what they’re good at being – of society finding a way to make room for people with a variety of talents, and also with a variety of deficits. If it’s really necessary for our individual survival to do something, then we have to do it as best we can. But the beauty of the great diversity of our species is that we can often team up and help each other, and each use our own special talents in that way.

    I think your five characteristics are spot-on. And I particularly like where you end up: encouraging people to find what they are talented at rather than beating themselves up for not being good at what they’re attempting to do.

      I ended it as I did because I was afraid it was getting to be kind of a downer. I still thought it had to be said because I think it’s kind of tragic if people really, really, want to do something but they just don’t have that gift. If they keep on struggling, thinking they can do it, it can ruin their life. Usually there’s something a person is at least moderately good at, if not brilliant. If they can content themselves with putting their effort there, they’ll be so much happier. Talent is a gift. Not having it is not a person’s fault.

    I think these characteristics you listed are super helpful. Self-delusion seems to be a rampant issue. Honestly analyzing talents might lead to much happier existences. Because we all have a talent for something, it just might not be what we want it to be. But it exists. Way to end on a hopeful note!

    • Well I hope we all have talent for something. I wish talent were more equally distributed so life would feel more fair. Some people have multiple talents. Some have little talent that’s obvious. I can afford to be philosophical about it since, as I described in the post, I have talents in some areas even though I have pretty big deficits in others. At least everyone ought to be able to feel good about putting in the effort to do the best they can at something worthwhile. As I said, it’s effort that deserves credit, not talent.

    I agree with most points. However, talented people are not necessarily successful. Especially in the arts. I mean this , and its true. There are tons of extremely talented musicians, actors, and painters out there who will never be a household name. They may never even sell a record or a painting, or get anywhere further than playing on street corners. By contrast, there are people in media of mediocore to little talent who are super stars. So talent and success don’t always go hand in hand. In fact, even persistence doesnt always. Its the luck of the draw. Look at how many untalented people we see in music, film, tv, and other arts everyday and they are successful, while so many truly talented people are singing on street corners or acting in basement play houses.

    • I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said. I was focusing on the attributes of talent in my post, not on the roll of luck. Personally, I think about 80-90% of the factors contributing to success are in the broad category of “luck,” meaning that they are things over which a person has no control. Being born with intelligence, talent, good looks, a winning personality, etc., is all part of the luck that can contribute to success, but none of it is enough. You also have to be in the right place and time and circumstances, where your inborn attributes can be put to use. You have to have access to the means of pursuing a course that utilizes your positive attributes. And of course you need to get good breaks rather than bad breaks all along the way.

      It’s also true that the general public—or segments of it—sometimes has what I would call abysmal taste. And of course that leads to the point that there really is no accounting for taste. It’s somewhat individual, and how do you say who is right? The bottom line is that if enough people like something and are willing to pay money for it, the person supplying it can become rich and famous. And yes, being in a position to do that is largely a matter of luck. Part of the point of my post is that hard work is never enough to assure success. It’s admirable, and frequently helps, but by itself it’s never enough.

    We are flooded with how-to books on writing. It’s a bit like painting by number and unfortunately can give the writer that if he or she follows these rules then they will succeed. The problem is that the writer’s voice and any talent he or she may have gets swallowed by all these rules.

  7. I think so many great points have been made. Talents are an innate inclination and a catalyst that gears some of us for a particular brand of accelerated supercharged competence. They do get buried under perceived needs of family scripts at times. I also like the point that Carrie Rubin makes about the denigrating effect of helicopter parents and the “everybody gets a gold star” brigade prancing behind mediocre achievements with the dulcet tones of “Brave Brave Sir Robin” while clipity cloping coconut halves. (Sorry for the Monty Python reference)

    I also agree that if we don’t do our best and it still appears excellent because we rode on talent then anyone that calling us a success is not perceiving the real situation. I witnessed a young man of stellar character and true grit who had to go to summer school and therefore graduated late. This was due to many things stacked against him none of which was a lack of effort. As I listened to the agonizingly patronizing drone attack from a clueless bureaucrat who condescended a veiled insult via praise, you know, that loose fitting verbal diarrhea about being late but still great for crossing the finishing the line… I cringed and vicariously felt pain. I would like to think it was all due to the bureaucrat’s failure to understand that this kid he was pinning an “also ran” ribbon on worked harder than most valedictorians I knew, but that was not the reason. The real reason was I remembered how easy it was for me to not try hard and still run rings around many of my peers. How asphyxiated I felt in a pool of mediocre. I was a failure praised and he was a hero diminished by our cultural lack of discernment. I was embarrassed to witness an inspiring success before me that went so unrecognized for how much it said about this young man, and how much it said about people like me who had coasted on talent. Frankly, that moment had a big impact on how I measured success from that point onward, through a lens of personal capability.

    I also think depending on the context of the local economy of relationships we are baptized in, there is something to be said for being willing to do what is called for even if it is not our area of greatest talent. People who sacrifice their passion and talent on the altar of practical needs are very admirable from my perspective. Life doesn’t always present us with scenarios evenly matched to accommodate the necessity for much less the nourishment to develop and express the full measure of our talents. The opposite is true as well, If we hide behind practical needs that could be covered by someone else then we have robbed ourselves and the world of our full value.

    One other thing, I have a couple talents that needed tamed. I am very talented at biting wit and persuasion. I found the wit talent counter productive to accomplishing other more important things like building solid caring relationships that need sufficient measures of trust and safety, so I curbed it. I found the persuasion talent counterproductive at times because I have been wrong and found that I subsumed the right course of action under my talent for persuasion. I have to develop a talent to hear all sides before opening my trap.I confess I miss the biting with sometimes and I am thrilled when I get to unsheathe my sparkly razor sharp sword of wit among those who use it as a springboard to and not to fall wounded. Talent has its place. I hope run on sentences do too, but a wise person once said, “Talented writers don’t write by the rules; they just write.”

      • No problem. I figured it out. And I didn’t even realize that in referring to a “wise person” you were quoting me! That’s a huge compliment, not necessarily deserved. I’ve been around for a while and done a lot of thinking, and I try to put my thought into what I write. That’s all anyone can do.

    • I hear you. There’s a wide range of ability out there, both in kind and in degree. You’re right that some people struggle very hard in this world because they have no particular talent or don’t have talent in the “right” areas. Effort should never go unrecognized and people should not be smug about what comes to them as a gift. I have heard some say that everyone has some gift, some talent. To me that comes from a wish that life somehow be fair, and in my experience it simply isn’t. What fairness there is in life has to be imposed upon it by us, by the way we treat each other.

    • You’re right, as long as it is clear. Of course people can be wrong about things like that, which can make it more complicated. I was trying to help people self-assess whether they have talent or not, or how much.

      But what is talent? A lot of people think the Beatles were talented. I ,for one, do not. So obviously it is subjective. If you like something you will think it is talented. If you don’t, you usually will not.

      • If one defines talent very broadly as the ability to do something that a significant number of other people can’t do, it should be clear that the list of such things is pretty long. Given the diversity of people’s tastes and interests, it’s not surprising that not everyone is equally impressed with all of those talents. And of course some people make judgements. I know I’m guilty of that sometimes. And I don’t think talent is all or none. There can be degrees of it. I wouldn’t personally say that the Beatles had no talent, because being able to sing and play even those very simple tunes that they started out with requires more musical talent than I have. (I have lousy rhythm too, so I couldn’t even be a drummer.) As singers, I wouldn’t compare the Beatles to Bing Crosby, or even to Elvis. For guitar-playing, I prefer Pepe Romero or Andres Segovia to any rock guitarist but would hesitate to say that rock guitarists have less talent. As you may guess, I’m not a huge Beatle fan, but this may be largely that I just wasn’t attracted to a lot of what they chose to do. I’ve actually decided in recent years that “She Loves You” is nicely put-together little song. And I’ve always liked “Help” and “Yesterday,” because of their themes. I think probably their single most impressive song is “Eleanor Rigby.” I defy you to listen to that one and say there was no talent involved in writing it. (I looked it up and apparently it was largely written by Paul McCartney with some suggestions by other group members incorporated.)

        When you said earlier that were both talented people who weren’t successful and successful people who weren’t talented, I took that to mean simply that there is a lot of luck involved in success of the fame-and-fortune variety, and that is something I very strongly feel is true. Not just in the arts, but in business or any other area. In the broadest sense, “success” is just managing to do the thing you are trying to do. You can’t succeed in that sense without having the ability to do the thing at some level, even if it’s only a very modest one. The Beatles’ early success was based on the ability to perform a very simple kind of music aimed at a very unsophisticated audience. So having “no talent” is a pretty harsh thing to say of any successful person, and probably not strictly accurate. The other half of the observation – that there are talented people out there who never achieve fame and fortune – to me is just really obvious. There are lots of talented people who never even try to go that route, and the kind of luck required to get there doesn’t grow on trees.

        Yes I do agree largely. I think maybe to say also I don’t think the Beatles were completely void of talent. But what I meant to say was to me- they were just average musicians. They normal talent. Nothing special. Its not that they had not talent at all. I just am not impressed with them. Vocally, The Beach Boys surpassed them.

        IMO, Elvis was in a league of his own. He didn’t just have talent, he had a charisma that is very rare. Things like Elvis only happen once in a life time. I think charisma mixed with a certain level of talent is what makes something spectacular. And I do think charisma is separate from talent (skill) but it is a gift. So you can have one or both . I do think luck and timing is involved in terms of who is discovered. Then of course, the arts are just one segment of talent. People can be talented in building things or even math and sciences.

      • I agree, both about the Beatles, and about Elvis. And yes, I think charisma is a rare gift. That puts it in the same category as talent, broadly speaking, but it is a separate thing.

    This does means that I’m talente in a field I really don’t like (Writing – but I do like to create stories). My early stories, once I knew the rules, work well. I wrote about 20 times in my life.

    While I suck at drawing. A thing I always did and I love to do. In my case, things are serious, because is not that I don’t have enough talent at drawing. i don’t have talent at all.
    Incredibly, I’m not that bad at drawing comics – putting panels together. I just can’t draw properly what is inside the vignettes.

    Yeah, is true that sense of quality and talent are two different things. I know an artist that is talented, but she appreciate my little shits. She told me she can’t see all the mistakes I can see and point in drawings.
    On the other hand, there are very unexperience artists, that still can’t draw, but they already told me that my drawings are mediocre. And i draw (at the moment) better than them.

    • I’m not sure what to make of some of what you say. And of course I can’t judge from here. Comics – like the ones in the newspaper – don’t always have to have very sophisticated drawings in order to be effective. The words, the layout, and the timing of how the thing unfolds, are all part of the story. (This is different from, say, graphic novels – which generally require artwork of a pretty high quality in order to meet reader’s expectations. That’s my two cents. My understanding is that for graphic novels, the writer and the artist are usually two different people, by the way. So maybe you have talent that would allow you to be half of such a team?

    • “… and wisdom to know the difference.” You pursue your wisdom and I’ll pursue mine. To gracefully bow out of the thing you’re ill-equipped to do and go instead to spend your precious days doing the thing you were made for is not, to me, a loss.
